Dr Damon Ashworth

Personal Philosophy:

I take a client-centred approach to therapy, and always aim to put the client's well-being ahead of any potential financial gains for myself or the companies that I work for. I believe that it is important to have a good fit with a Psychologist for therapy to produce the most effective results, and I am happy to refer a client onto another Psychologist who may be a better fit if you are not happy with what we are doing together in session. I encourage openness and honesty in my sessions, but also encourage clients to go at the pace that feels comfortable to them and to reveal vulnerable things only if they feel safe enough and ready to do so. If we can build up a trusting relationship together then I believe that anyone has the capacity to improve their level of well-being through their therapy journey. I am happy to see clients for as short or as long as they would like until they have reached their goals and are feeling more fulfilled in their life.

I have worked at:

  • The Monash Psychology Centre
  • Austin Hospital's Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital - with the Veterans PTSD group program.
  • Caulfield Rehabilitation Hospital
  • Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre
  • Melbourne Sleep Disorders Centre
  • Victorian Counselling & Psychological Services

I loved working in hospitals but find that I am able to see more clients in my private practice work. I have therefore done this on a full-time basis over the past three years. I feel very honoured to be able to do the work that I do, and although it can sometimes be tiring I wouldn't give it up even if I won the lottery.

I like to maintain a well-balanced life incorporating work, personal development, leisure and relationships. This means I keep fit, go to the gym, swim, ride, play Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis. I love to travel and snow ski, and try to only work 4 days a week when I can. I prioritise healthy relationships with others that I can be authentic around, but also see the importance of down time by myself to rest, reflect and meditate.
